How To Use Monochrome Colors

How To Use Monochrome Colors – The short answer is that you can use any color you want. That’s one of the great things about being an artist!

While it’s true that you can use any color you want for a monochrome under drawing, not all colors are good choices. The color you choose will greatly affect the appearance of the finished drawing, so you need to choose carefully. Believe it or not, it is possible to damage a drawing at the drawing level below.

Light colors may seem like a natural choice, but they are not. If you choose a color that is too bright, it will have little or no effect on the final color.

I chose the opposite color on the color wheel from Deep Chestnut for this one under the drawing. Apple green for horse and grass green for tack. I soon learned that they were too little to affect the final picture.

So be careful to use light colors. They may not be confident enough to make much of a difference in the finished drawing.

You can get away with darker colors more easily than lighter colors, but you also run the risk of drawing under dark, colored glazes will be ineffective.

I chose dark blue for this drawing because the horse is dark brown and the horse is backlit.

This under drawing looks great, doesn’t it? I should leave it at that. Each color I add makes the drawing darker and darker until there is no more room to add important details. The finished drawing was too dark and blurry for my liking, and was not promising.

If you can use the paint with very light pressure – whisper soft pressure – the darker colors can be produced better under the drawing.

But if you have a heavy hand or are not confident in your ability to produce light pressure, it is better to stay away from dark colors.

As you may know, complementary colors appear opposite each other on the color wheel. Yellow and purple are complementary colors. The same goes for red and green.

Technically speaking, a monochrome under-drawing can also be a coherent under-drawing. Consistency under drawings is great for drawing almost anything.

But generally I keep two methods of painting separate. I use the complementary method so often that if I really want to use color for under-drawing, I avoid complementary colors.

The same is true for ground tones, as I used ground tones for umber under the drawing method.

There is no way! I’m just telling you why I don’t use complementary colors or ground tones when I use monochrome under a drawing.

How To Choose Your Infographic Color Schemes

If you’ve never used color under drawing before, the color wheel is your treasure chest! Use any color you want!

Choose six to twelve colors at random from your pencil collection. Cover each color with a medium print (or several layers of light print) on a sheet of paper. To keep things simple, make each swatch as similar in color and value as you can.

Then choose a different color, and layer it over each color swatch. You want to see how colors paint under the surface color, and this is a quick and easy way to do that.

If you want a more in-depth test, measure each color swatch from the lightest possible to the darkest possible. Then do the same with the color layered over the drawing colors below.

I think it won’t take you long to figure out which colors work for underlining and which don’t.

As I said at the beginning, you can use any color you want to draw monochrome under the drawing.

Some colors hinder you more than they help you, however, so take the time to experiment before you start painting. You’ll be glad you did.
